How to import personal belongings to Canada after you get a PR

Importing Personal stuff to Canada is free after you get a PR. You must ensure to follow a due process in order to avail this benefit. If you miss the chance during your first landing to the Canada, then you will not be able to claim this benefit.

The good thing is whether you enter by Road or come by Air, you can still become eligible for free import.

Importing Personal Stuff to Canada as a new Permanent Resident

Canada Immigration Authority requires you to declare the personal stuff you will bring to Canada as a new PR in a specific format. Official Websites call it as :
  • BSF186 - List of items you are bringing on the day of landing.
  • BSF186A - List of items that will follow / come later after your PR landing.
The filled forms have to be presented to the border security agent while doing the first entry.

Filling BSF186 & BSF186A

BSF186

  1. The Shaded area of the form is not to be filled. That will be used by Border Security Agent. He will enter the details based on your landing. This may vary with your place and port of landing.
  2. Enter the following information in the respective columns :
    • Importer's Name = Enter your Name
    • Importer's Address - Enter your Canadian Address. If you do not have, you can enter your Friend's address.
    • Country of Origin - Where product was sold originally.
    • Country of Export - From where the person is importing.
    • Description of Gods -
      • Enter the details of stuff you are importing on the same day. This need not be very well elaborated. For example if you are getting Kitchen items like Pressure Cooker, Utensils, Dinner Set etc, you can mention as Kitchenware and enter the calculated value.
      • If the item is expensive, I will recommend mentioning it explicitly as individual item. For example you can mention 22 CT Diamond Set 40 Gm Gold and its value in Canadian Dollar. I will recommend you to keep purchase receipt or you can get a certificate of details from a local Jeweler.
    • Conveyance - This is something that generally people coming from USA, Mexico or Europe use a lot. You need to declare your vehicle VIN number its estimated value based on KBB (Kelly Blue Book). Make sure vehicle is not on lease or should not have any active loan. It should be on the name of the PR candidate.
  3. That is it. No more additional detail is required. If you have a big list of items that is not able to accommodate in the specified section area, you may use a A4 Sheet and note down the details.

Final Step

Once you have these forms, the Border Security Officer will enter his part of data and will hand over it back to you after he is convinced with the information.

Key Tips for filling the form

  1. You can fill it using a pen or add details on your computer and print it. Printing is recommended as it is more easily readable and gives better clarity. Do not worry if you do not print it, I also personally filled mine with a pen.
  2. Do not ever enter False information. You may think that you can bluff any person that is built to do this job, but do not forget you are entering a new Country for the first time. What will you achieve with any false information. Never ever do anything what is prohibited by law.
  3. You may or may not have this form filled up. If you are not bringing anything, then you do not need this.
  4. You can have these forms filled separately for all the members of joint application. For example a husband can have list of his items mentioned in his own BSF186/BSF186A and wife can have her own list.

My personal Experience

I created one main form BSF186 with first page as list of items I imported on the same day. I attached the BSF186A along with the BSF186. When I showed that to the Border security agent, he marked the First page(BSF186) as Imported and marked a comment on Second page (BSF186A) as "To be imported later".

One important thing I did was that as instructed I printed this form on Legal Size paper. I did it and will recommend you doing the same. You can go to any place and get the legal size papers or the print outs directly.

I mentioned Conveyance but I told the Border Security agent that I will import my car later as I was not having title received as I purchased my leased vehicle recently itself. If you case is genuine, you will not face any issues. I will strictly recommend not to give any False information. Don't ever do that.

I will create the video for easy reference and will attach the same below in the article.
